Speaker Ian Burrow will talk about research he has done over the years on how the Revolution was viewed in Britain at the time.  There were voices raised in support of the American cause, as well as stereotypically hostile views of “those damn’d Rebels,” and some courageous acts of resistance to British policy.

About the Speaker –

Ian Burrow has been an archaeological and cultural resource management professional since 1975, firstly in England and, since 1988, in the United States. From 1988 to 2015 he was Vice-President of Hunter Research, Inc, and managed numerous archaeological projects throughout the mid-Atlantic region during that time. He has published many papers on archaeological subjects and is a frequent presenter at local and national conferences, events and programs. He is the 2025 recipient of the William L. Kidder Public History Award of the Hopewell Valley Historical Society.

He is highly qualified to speak on British Attitudes to the American Revolution because he grew up in England and studied American history in high school! In addition to that, he has worked on numerous Revolutionary War sites in the Mid-Atlantic region. This presentation makes use of research that came out of those projects.

Since 2015 he has worked on numerous regional historic advocacy and planning projects, These include landscape history studies on preserved areas on Sourland Mountain, cataloging of the American-Indian collection of the Hopewell Museum, research on the history and archaeology of the Old School Baptist Meeting in Hopewell, and of the Stoutsburg-Sourland African-American Museum/Mount Zion AME church in Montgomery.

Event Co-sponsored by the Hopewell Museum, the Hopewell Valley Historical Society, and the Hopewell Public Library.
